A Letter from a Teen Services Participant (edited for privacy)
Dear Teen Services
You may not remember me but my name is
DISCLOSED; I took part in the TLC retreat in the winter of 08’. I hope you remember me because we had a really good talk about possibly working together in the future for Daly City Park and Rec, but I understand that you introduce yourself to hundreds of new students as TLC director, thus remembering me, along with hundreds of students, is almost impossible.
The reason why I contacted you is because I want to film a documentary about what constitutes a family. Now a days, modern families may consist of two fathers or mothers, divorced or separated parents, step-parents, and many other variables. No one can really define a family, in my opinion, because some families are unconditionally bonded by blood, similar interests, or just simply growing together. I want to make a documentary in which I interview these different types of families and receive their definition of “family”.
As a senior, we have a huge project called the “senior exit project” in which students, like me, part take in a new learning experience through community service and mentoring*. I was wondering if you could be my mentor, helping me define family. I do understand that someone of your position may be busy so I truly understand if you don’t have the time. If you are interested, we can talk about this in further detail through phone or a personal meeting.
Thank you so much for introducing me to TLC. If it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t have the confidence in taking on a huge project such as this one.Again, thank you and have a wonderful day.
