Dropped Out or Pushed Out?
A Youth Town Hall on (Mis)Education in Oakland & Beyond
Oakland is a city of beautiful contradictions. It’s home to one of the most diverse populations in the country, but our schools remain segregated by race and class. The Town has created cutting-edge youth organizations and cultural movements, but we have one of the worst dropout rates in California — more than 1 out of 3 high school students in OUSD will not cross the stage to graduate.
Are OUSD’s problems because of individual students’ failures — or are there bigger forces at play that have failed our youth? What role do things like ethnic studies, budget cuts, and community participation have when it comes to student success?
Come speak your mind about the education system in this youth-led, uncensored environment. Share your story, learn about the issues, and get connected so we can change the system. Featuring special guest speakers, youth performers, and you!
